The 2021 edition of the Colourful Yunnan Granfondo Cycling Festival will return to our beloved multistage format with four cities approved and confirmed from 1 to 6 November 2021. As the covid-19 pandemic is still not over, additional safety measures and conditions of entry must be adhered to to ensure the event can take place in an appropriate manner. Details are being updated on our dedicated WeChat channel (Nordic Ways) and this website, and registration for the event opens on Wednesday, 15 September at 15:00 Beijing Time.
Read MoreThe 2020 edition of the Colourful Yunnan Granfondo Cycling Festival in Chengjiang has been won by Jia Zhichao and Zhang Xixi. Due to the global covid 19 pandemic the event was understandably reduced to a one-day race of 108 km around the town of Chengjiang in Yuxi, on the north of the majestic Fuxian Lake. The fact that it was just a single day inspired the victory contenders as soon as the green flag went up in the leading car as attacks were launched immediately. It was cold and a bit damp, and the first 20 kilometres had it in them, too, with several steep gradients, some technical descending and a longer hillclimb. Luo Danzhi did his best to break away with a few others and broke up the front of the peloton. But when Jia Zhichao took over and put the hammer down, only Gong Baimo briefly looked like he could match the pace of the talented 27-year-old from Chengdu, who is anything but unknown in our event history. In 2016 Jia Zhichao pulled off an amazing solo of over 70 km to win the Kunming stage. In recent years he was often one of the best rivals uphill of Miga and the Mongolians. Today, though, he went with over 90 km left on the board to the finish!
Read MoreThe second stage of the virtual Granfondo Yunnan Challenge on Kinomap was the longest and fastest. Set in Dali along the mythical Erhai Lake, riders-at-home had to complete a virtual course of 47,5km based on last year’s real stage of Granfondo Yunnan. In the end we have the same winners as last week in Mangshi, even though competition was more dense. Especially for Lithuanian Marius Ratkevičius, who took the stage win only on the last day. Ratkevičius did 2 minutes and 24 seconds faster than the rider with the Kinomap nickname Hicky625, who had been leading most of the week. The winning time was 1 hour 20 minutes and 4 seconds. That is not the virtual course record of this stage. Last month a rider in France nicknamed Richard BTT recorded a lightning 58’58”! A Polish rider nicknamed Grzesiekk19006 was third in 1:30:56.
Read MoreLithuanian Marius Ratkevičius was the fastest rider-at-home this week as he set the fastest time on the first and shortest stage of the Virtual Granfondo Yunnan Challenge on the Kinomap platform. Set in Mangshi, Dehong Prefecture in the Southwest of Yunnan, Ratkevičius recorded a time of 15’20” for the 8.4 km race that ends with a steep climb of just over 1 km in length. Interestingly, he took part in the ‘real’ Granfondo last year and was 6th in that same stage in a time of 15’04”, 48 seconds slower than winner Myagmarsuren Baasankhuu. This week’s testifies Ratkevičius is almost in the same shape as twelve months ago, but also that Kinomap works with pretty accurate data!

Read MoreAs announced via our various social media channels, at 15:00 Beijing time today, we open the registration for the single-day Colourful Yunnan Granfondo Cycling Festival in Chengjiang on Sunday, 29 November. Due to the ongoing prevention measures adopted by local authorities, the race of 108 km will be limited to 300 people. Those 300 slots will be handed out this afternoon on a first come, first serve basis.
Read MoreThe global covid 19 pandemic has wreaked havoc in the sports, cultural and entertainment industry this year. Only a minority of planned non-professional sports events are taking place, with a much reduced scope, and most have been cancelled all together out of safety fears. Following weeks of reflection and discussion with Yunnan Sports and all relevant authorities of the cities on the Granfondo Yunnan tour, we are therefore quite pleased to announce that this year’s event will take place - albeit in a restricted format and largely adapted to today’s needs in the covid 19 world.
This year’s Granfondo Yunnan will consist of a one-day ‘real' long distance race on Sunday, 29 November 2020, preceeded by a virtual stage race on the preceding weekends in November.
Read MoreMany people have been contacting us since last week with the question ‘how to register’ for this year’s edition of our Colourful Yunnan Granfondo Cycling Festival. Traditionally, July is indeed the month when that happens. 2020 is obviously very different from what we have all become used to. While our event, scheduled for 7-14 November, is still ‘active’ and by no means cancelled, we are compelled to wait with the opening of registration until China’s Ministry of Sports gives the green light for mass participation sports events to take place in the country again. We are encouraged by strong signals we picked up in the last two weeks that this announcement may be coming soon. We therefore ask for your patience once more, and will update you as soon as the situation allows us.
Read MoreAs the world continues to cope with the corona pandemic, there have been positive signs for a return to some kind of normal life in several Asian countries including China. Following discussions with the relevant authority in Yunnan Province, we would like to emphasise that the Granfondo Yunnan event remains on schedule for 7-14 November 2020. We cannot yet provide any further details on the precise look of all six stages, but as we mentioned in our latest statement back in February, you can take the 2019 programme as guideline.
Read MoreThe 2020 Colourful Yunnan Granfondo Cycling Festival remains scheduled for 7-14 November. As China along with several other countries are currently aiming to contain the spread of the corona virus, we request for your understanding that news updates are scarse for the time being. Nevertheless, there is no reason to assume a cancellation of the event right now. As every year, registration for the Granfondo Yunnan will immediately follow the conclusion of the necessary paperwork with local authorities, which typically means late June/early July. However, the team of Nordic Ways is hopeful that this year we can open the online registration earlier.
It is envisaged that the event programme will again see the start in Mangshi, Dehong Prefecture, and the finish in famous mountain tourism city Lijiang. The technical details for 2020 will become available during and after our technical mission in May. For sure there will be amendments to the six stages, but nevertheless you can take the 2019 programme as a useful guideline on what to expect in November.
